On 27th March, 2011, Explore Himalaya conducted “GHOREPANI / POON HILL TREK” for Bolton Hospice Charity Group from UK. While the trek was organized by Different Travel – a direct action charity challenge tour operator, Explore Himalaya arranged the logistics for the group.
After a warm welcome at the International Airport in Kathmandu, the group was escorted to their hotel. In the evening, Mr. Suman Pandey, Explore Himalaya’s President briefed them about their upcoming trek. After briefing, the group sat down for a traditional Nepalese dinner. With the savory fare, traditional Nepalese song and dance performances kept the guests entertained .
Early next morning, the group boarded a bus for their trip to Pokhara. As they made their way out of Kathmandu via a tourist coach, an enchanting panorama of mountain views and quaint villages opened up. After reaching Pokhara, they were advised to take it easy – to rest & recharge their batteries for their trekking adventure. Next morning , after a hearty breakfast, the group was driven to Nayapul – the start-off point of their trek. After hiking for 4 hours, it was time to stop for lunch at Tirkhedunga . The first day’s trek ended in Ulleri.
On the second day of the trek, the trail proved to be steep but the stunning scenery more then made up for the tough trek. Walking past rhododendron forests with snow capped peaks in the background, the trekkers made their way towards Ghorepani- their stop for the day.
Morning dawned bright and clear and the snowy spires of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and other Himalayan giants glittering in the early morning sun mesmerized one and all. Everybody rushed to Poon Hill ‘s[3210m) viewpoint to get a better view and to preserve this magical moment in their cameras forever.
The next destination was Ghandruk – a Gurung village. Even though the group was caught in a downpour just before Ghandruk, breathtaking views of Annapurna South, Annapurna, Annapurna III, Machhapuchhare and Hiunchuli brightened up the mood. Upon reaching Ghandruk, some opted for a massage to relax their over worked muscles whilst others went to visit the “Gurung Village Museum”. One of the member was celebrating her birthday that day. To make it special the group planned a surprise for the birthday girl. She was thoroughly surprised and delighted when she was presented with a cake right after dinner!
From Ghandruk the group descended to Nayapul. At Nayapul they boarded a bus which took them to Pokhara. A half-an-hour’s return flight from Pokhara brought the group back to Kathmandu. As this was their last night in Nepal, Explore Himalaya organized a farewell dinner for the group at Kathmandu’s ‘Rum Doodle’ restaurant. The dinner ended with the group signing their names and leaving their imprints on a huge ‘Yeti Foot’. The next morning the group was driven to the international airport for their flight back home.
All in all a first class trek - all the members were very happy!
