China & Nepal agree on Mt. Everest’s official height

Everest, neighbors China and Nepal finally agreed that the official height of the mountain (which traverses the borders of both countries) should be taken as 8848metres.The Chinese previously held that the height of the mountain should be measured by its rock height (8844m) while Nepal argued that it should be measured by its snow height (four meters higher than the rock height). The two countries finally agreed on the height of the world’s tallest peak, which is 8848m, during talks in Kathmandu earlier this month. Nepal also recognized China’s claim that the rock height of Everest as 8,844m. The broadly-accepted height of 8,848m was first recorded by an Indian survey in 1955.
