Great Himalaya Trail-Climate Smart Celebrity Trek (GHT-CSCT) led by the record setting Mt. Everest summiteer Apa Sherpa reached its final leg on 20th April, 2012 at Darchula, Far-Western Nepal. Apa and his team had started the walk from Taplejung district three months ago, on 16th January, 2012.The team covered the 1,700 km long Great Himalaya Trail twenty three days ahead of the schedule, owing to a detour the team were compelled to take to Khalanga because of heavy snowfall on the alpine routes . The trek was organized to raise global awareness on the impacts of Climate Change in the Himalayas and establish GHT as the world’s highest long-distance walking trail and Nepal’s newest tourism product among travelers and tourism professionals worldwide. Organizers of this trek included Himalayan Climate Initiative, Government of Nepal and jointly supported by DFID, British Council, SNV, NTB, TAAN, Geo-Eye, Asian Trekking, North Face and Dell.
