Kanchenjunga Expedition 2007

Nepal Mountaineering Association of Nepal stated that the Friendship Kanchenjunga Expedition 2007 was the only Expedition group climbing Kanchenjunga this season from the south face of Kanchenjunga. The Spanish team was led by Mr. Oscar Cadiach Puig (54 years), co led by Mr. Inigo De Pineda Blanc (39 years) consisted of other 4 members- Mr. Julen Gotzon Requeta (40 years), Mr. Jesus Fernando Rubio Esteban (46 years), Mr. Francisco Javier Goni Lobera (42 years) and Mr. Joan Riba Miranda (19 years). They were supported by experienced team of Sherpas from Explore Himalaya, Mr. Phurba Pasang Sherpa (Sirdar- ), Mr. Temba Sherpa (Cook – ), Mr. Wangdi Sherpa and others.

Kanchenjunga Expedition 2007

After warm welcome by EH on 01 April and a quick warm up session on Island Peak (6165 Meters), the team were ready to set foot on Kanchenjunga (8586 Meters). So on 22 April, the group left by land from Kathmandu to Jiri. After a night halt, the very next day they flew to Ramche boarding MI 17 Chopper and reaching Low Base Camp at the height of 3400 meters, where they setup their first camp. Four days after reaching Low Base Camp, on 26 of May, Mr. Joan Riba Miranda, who was the youngest member in the team left for Kathmandu as he was not feeling well. So after seeing Joan off, few days at Low Base Camp and 2 more camps, they reached the height of 5055 meters, the Advance Camp on 30 of April.

Everest Expeditions 2007

On 24 May 2007, two members of the team Mr. Jesus Fernando Rubio Esteban (46 years) and Mr. Francisco Javier Goni Lobera (42 years) summited Kanchenjunga
at 1630 Hrs Local time. Later than evening at 1800 Hrs Local time, the Leader and Co Leader Mr. Oscar Cadiach Puig (54 years), Mr. Inigo De Pineda Blanc (39 years) respectively summited Kanchenjunga.

On 25 May 2007, Mr. Inigo De Pineda Blanc (39 years) slipped and fell off the cliff approximately 1000 Meters down from the height of 8200 meters at 1030 hrs local time. Meanwhile, Mr. Oscar Cadiach Puig (54 years), returned back to the camp where the sherpa staffs were desperately waiting them at 8000 meters.

On 27 May 2007, Equariel B3 Rescue Heli copter was sent to Kanchenjunga to recover the body of Mr. Inigo De Pineda but with bad terrain, the rescue had to be terminated.

Expeditions Explore Himalaya 2007

On 28 May, 2007 the team walked back to Base Camp from Advance Base Camp and after few days at Base Camp, on 31 may 2007, they flew back to Kathmandu on MI 17 Chopper. They reached Kathmandu sharp at 1100 Hrs, where they were picked up by EH Staff and transferred to their hotel.

The President of Explore Himalaya Travel & Adventure Mr. Suman Pandey had the final words with the leader of the Spanish Friendship Kanchenjunga Expedition 2007 Mr. Oscar Cadiach Puig before he left for Barcelona on 1st June 2007. During the conversation Oscar mentioned that though this was the first time he worked with us he found the entire team from Explore Himalaya to be very professional and helpful especially during the difficult times when the team had lost a member, a very dear friend Mr. Inigo De Pineda Blanc.

Oscar complimented on the services rendered by the Sirdar and the cook and promised to have yet another group to climb one of the mountains in the western Nepal.

He also found Nepal to be a very safe destination for the tourists after years of insurgency and mentioned that he would recommend his fellow companions from Spain to visit Nepal.
