Nuwakot- a newly explored mountain biking destination!
On 8th February 2007 Nuwakot embraced a remarkable historical event, First Ozark Mountain Biking Championship! The event was organized by Explore Himalaya Travel & Adventure with a goal to promote Nuwakot festival and tourism potentials of Nuwakot. 82 from 103 mountain bikers made it to the finish point of the 46-km race course. Mr. Padam Sabenhhang completed the race within 2 hours, 26 minutes and 53 seconds and became the race winner. Mr. Padam was followed by Mr. Suresh Kumar Dulal, the first runner-up, within the time frame of 2 hours, 31 minutes and 41 seconds and then by Mr. Ajay Pandit Chhetri, the second runner-up, within 2 hours, 36 minutes and 22 seconds. An amazing sight of Mr. Yam Lal Rasily, a one-legged biker, completing the race left the entire observants awe-struck. Mr. Rasily has proved a famous saying, ‘nothing is impossible’ andhas become a living inspiration for all. Non-stopping applause and warm hospitality of Nuwakot people accompanied the bike racers throughout their biking journey giving them a memorable experience of a lifetime.
Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Pradeep Gyawali, ‘flagged off’ the event on 8th February 2007 at Basantapur. Thereafter, mountain bike ralley commenced from Kathmandu Durbar Square to Budhanilkantha along 15 km route with the participation of 103 bikers. On reaching Budhanilkantha, the participants started racing from the start point to Nuwakot Durbar Square. Biking amidst pristine wilderness, picturesque landscape and the surrounding cultural richness of Nuwakot, the participants under the close watch of the race director and paramedic team made their way to the finish point.
On 9th February 2007 the bikers participated in a mountain bike rally which took off from Nuwakot, Trisuli Bazaar, Colony to Gerkhutar and finally concluded at the district head quarter of Bidur along 25 km route. Rt. Honorable Speaker of the Interim Parliament, Subash Chandra Nemwang, gave away prizes to winners amidst the Inaugural function of “Nuwakot Festival” at the district headquarter. The prizes included trophies and cash award of Rs. 25,000, Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 10,000 to First, Second and Third winners respectively which were contributed by the organizer, Explore Himalaya. Honoring the courage and determination of Mr. Yam Lal Rasily, he was also awarded the Special Cash Prize of Rs. 5000.
The event had altogether 103 participants from age group 14 to 53 including 7 foreigners and 4 women. The race so far, has been considered as, “longest and extra challenging,” as described by the participants. The biking journey not just proved fulfilling from adventure point of view but undeniably insightful when it comes to cultural immersion.
