Explore Himalaya organized another successful expedition to Mera peak for three Americans and a British climber. The group commenced their journey from Kathmandu on 29th October with a flight to Phaplu. On the same day they trekked from Phaplu to Nuntala (2350m). The next day they hiked to Kharikhola. Next day’s trek was to Pangkongma. The group spent a day resting at Pangkongma, a picturesque village set amidst verdant forests and high waterfalls. On the 2nd of November the group entered Hinku valley as they trekked to Narjing Dingma, (2650m) a settlement of bamboo huts . On 3rd November the group had a stiff climb to Chalem kharka (3600m), passing through rhododendron forests. The following day they trekked from Chalem Kharka to Khula kharka (4120m). Ascending over several high rises, the group got to view the Paanch Pokhari (five lakes). On 5th November they reached Khote. Beneath tall pine trees and a grassy ground the group set up their camp. On the 6th the group trekked to Tagnak glacier (4355m) where the huge cliffs of Mera towers above, towards the east. A day was spent at the glacier for acclimatization. On the 8th the group started for Khare (5100m) where the base camp was set up. From Khare the north face of Mera peak is visible. On the 9th the group tried the ridge ascent from Hinku Nup glacier following the lateral moraine into an arena of peaks and glacial lakes. On 10th November winding through the crevasses, the group set up their high camp at 5800m.From the high camp a panoramic view of Kanchanjunga ,Chamlang, Makalu, Baruntse , Lhotse, Nuptse and Everest greeted the climbers. On 11th November 2007 at 8:30 a.m. the group reached the summit of Mera Peak. Mark Erin Robbins (American), Pamela Susan Sbar(American) and Barry Kenneth Anspach(American) made it to the summit while Peter Bradley Dignan(British) could not make it. The climbers were assisted by two sherpas.
