About Each One, Teach One
Explore Himalaya Community Service Program has introduced the Each one Teach one project with the goal of providing school level education to conflict-affected children in a bid to give them a better chance to live a happy, secure and healthy life. The project is primarily focused on ensuring children’s rights to education. For this, EHCSP seeks financial support from various donors. With the funds collected from the donors, the project aims to provide a monthly scholarship of Rs 1000 to conflict-affected children through high school graduation. The money received will be directly utilized for the childrens' school fees, stationeries, outfits and other necessary educational resources.
Why this project?
The current scenario in Nepal highlights the alarming aftermath of the Maoist ‘People’s war.’ The armed conflict has afflicted Nepal with random killings, terror, threats, kidnappings, human rights violations and unease since 1996. Corruption and misuse of state authority ruled over Nepal for a decade, diverting funding from positive social programs. Many children were physically and mentally abused, maimed, wounded, physically disabled or psychologically tortured by both sides of the war. Children are among the most vulnerable groups in Nepal who have been directly and indirectly impacted by the pernicious armed conflict. Official statistics evidence that more than 3000 children have been displaced, about 1500 orphaned and many traumatized alarmingly, affecting their social, physical, mental and emotional development. Many became victims of child labor and police atrocities. With the fleeing of teachers, school shutdowns, children’s forced involvement in insurgency and the displacement of families, children are being deprived of their fundamental right to education. The conflict has left thousands of children orphaned or helpless. Many bright children who have a high potential for becoming capable citizens to build a better future with the power of education are today faced with uncertainties.
Who are the beneficiaries?
Conflict-affected children will directly benefit from this scholarship program. This project is aimed at empowering all those children who have been displaced, orphaned, forced into child labor and subjected to various atrocities during armed conflict. Education will be their powerful tool to combat their misfortunes and shape their future. Since children are the hope of the future, empowered children in the long run will undoubtedly empower the whole community and thus, the entire nation.
Empowerment through Education
Education is the only tool that can rehabilitate the conflict-affected children. Besides cognitive development, education is equally important for the psychological, social, and physical welfare of children. Education instills in children the crucial humanitarian values such as equality, tolerance and peace. With access to education, children can attain a sense of freedom, purpose and responsibility, self-confidence and vision for the future. To be advantaged in terms of income, health and opportunity, formal education is a must. Undeniably, education holds the key to children’s empowerment.
Scholarship program
Fourteen children from Nuwakot were nominated to receive scholarships under the Each one - Teach one project on the 23rd of February 2007 during the Golden Jubilee celebration of "Shree Bhairabi Higher Secondary School" in Nuwakot, Nepal. This project was implemented from the 'Educational Year' in May 2007 and is aimed at empowering all those children who have been displaced, orphaned, forced into child labor and subjected to various atrocities during the armed conflict. As more sponsors are found, we will broaden this program to include another 14 or more children.
How can you help?
Investing in children is investing in the future. You have the power to make a difference in the lives of these poor souls by supporting this project with your donation. Annually, sponsors will contribute to the scholarship program for these conflict-affected children. The cost to educate one child for an entire year is USD250 (or 125 GBP). 80% of the funds collected will go directly to the children for the educational needs. 20% of the amount goes for administrative work and local coordinators (ie USD 50).Local guardians will be authorized to utilize this fund for children's education. We have local monitors who will ensure that the funds are used for the children’s educational needs and who will follow the children’s progress in school. We will send you periodically the children's regular progress reports to assure you that your contribution has indeed been very used for the purposes for which it was intended. The Explore Himalaya website currently has pictures and short bios for the children who have been selected for these scholarships. Join our team and offer a child a future.

Role of a Co-ordinator
1) The main role of a co-ordinator is to search for prospective sponsors and help raise sponsorship. We also provide online registration form and agreement letter for the prospective sponsors.
2) The Co-ordinator helps in updating our reports about the children to the sponsors.
3)
The Co-ordinator collectively sends us the donation raised from the sponsors.
4)
The Co-ordinator keeps us informed about the status of the sponsors.
Nominating and then declaring the nominated children for the project
We firstly go to the villages and try to find out about the background and family-history of the child. For verification, we check the facts with the other villagers. When we are sure that we have a genuine case, we ask the guardian of the child to fill the application form and submit it with the supporting documents, duly attested by their school, concerned department and District Development Committee. We then make a profile of the children based on these then we publish to our website.

Tender Lives Lighted - Update on the Each One, Teach One Project
Recently I along with my family visited our ancestral home in Nuwakot. Our family home, a large and ancient building, which my grandfather built, had taken on a pleasing look after the renovation. Of course, the building has retained its old world charm but the modern amenities which has been fitted with, made our stay comfortable and easy. In fact, I am ready to welcome any guest or visitor who wish to visit Nuwakot to stay at my ancestral home.
In Nuwakot, I got the chance to meet the children whose education has been sponsored by our Each One, Teach One Project. The children had come along with their guardians and parents. As I saw the bright and eager faces of these children, I realized how little it takes to make a difference in these children's lives.
All of them expressed their gratitude to the generous sponsors. Among the 16 sponsored children (Prabina Acharya, Rama Nepal and Dipesh Nepal) could not come for a visit. But I assure their sponsors that an update on their progress will soon be posted. Here is a detailed report on each child's progress.

Each One – Teach One in 2008
We extend our gratitude to all the respective country co-ordinators and to the sponsors for taking responsibility of the needy and deprived children of Nepal through our project “Each One Teach One”. We are very proud to continue Each One Teach One to its second year with the help of the valued co-ordinators as well as the sponsors.
In the first year of Each One Teach One, we had included those children who are conflict affected. This year we have 16 more children. In our search for conflict affected children with weak economic background, we received many requests and applications from children belonging to under privileged and marginalized group of society. Therefore, from this year we have decided to look for sponsors for children from the needy and marginalized group. However, our first priority shall always be to the conflict affected children.
